I think it means it can hold 15 years of gameplay, not it runs nonstop for 15 years before shutting down.

And you could always trade them from your current game into a new one, with a new save holder thing.

Wrong sir! So long as metal is attached to a battery the battery will continue to drain even when off.

False. The battery powers the in-game clock, and runs constantly whether the game is on or off. Also, the game won't die when the battery dies, the clock will just stop working.

Replacement batteries are pretty cheap. $1-$5

Pokemon Red,blue, silver, gold and crystal take CR2025 batteries
Pokemon yellow takes a CR1616

1. trade valuable pokemon to second cartrage.
2. replace the battery in first game.(cr2025 for r/b, cr1616 for y, cr2025 or cr2032 for g/sc)
3. unfortunatly restart first cartrage from the beginning.
4. catch worthless trade-fodder rattata and pidgey.
5. trade good pokemon back into game.
6. redo adventure with old pokemon in new save file.
