hey op,
that is not religion. arent you looking at it with a narrow minded view? those are just people practicing their set of beliefs. here are a couple of few people who practiced their set of beliefs:
Holocaust - Hitler - 11 million people were executed
Medieval Inquisition - Roman Catholics - approximately 1.8 million people were executed
Spanish inquistiion - Roman Catholics - approximately 125,000 people were executed
these are assholes killing people because they practice their own set of beliefs.

Religion is NOT the source of all evil, but that doesnt make it a good thing either.
Look at it another way, countries, states, areas... that in a natural way(without force) gain a high percentage of non-belivers are proven more peaceful, better educated, happier, have lower crime, have on average a more equal society and have in general a higher income per capita.
I personally wont say that religion is always used badly, but i personally think it holds us back as a world society, it highlights the boarders between cultures, and slows down our society from progressing.
There is not one thing that religion gives us that we cant achieve without it, but there is a lot of things that religion keeps us from achieving.
Religion is not evil, its poluting.
