I don't know if you are an American, but if you are, I am truly appaled by your knowledge.
That's a monk, a buddhist monk, NO; not some kind of fancy monk which must not kill any ants or some sorts, just a NORMAL (maybe a bit fanatic) buddhist monk.
But that's not the reason I am mad.
I am mad because the picture is taken in Vietnam, in SOUTH-VIETNAM.
The person is burning himself because it was a form of protest in South-Vietnam at that time.
South-Vietnam had a government, INSTITUTED BY THE USA, which was christian, this christian (I repeat instituted by the US!) government didn't like freedom of religion, but the US didn't fucking care, because as long as they weren't communist, they could kill all they like.
This monk is burning himself because this US favoured government, instituted by the US after they abolished elections because of the fear communist's would win, was executing buddhists and burning buddhist temples.
The latter part of your answer is the only part which matters, the first part (which you lay emphasis on) is not relevant in any way.
PS: Did I note the government was non-democratically instituted by the US?

TL;DR: You better read it because it would be good for amerifats to learn about problems in history they have caused.

June 11, 1963, Thich Quang Duc, a Buddhist monk from Vietnam, burned himself to death at a busy intersection in downtown Saigon to bring attention to the repressive policies of the Catholic Diem regime that controlled the South Vietnamese government at the time. Buddhist monks asked the regime to lift its ban on flying the traditional Buddhist flag, to grant Buddhism the same rights as Catholicism, to stop detaining Buddhists and to give Buddhist monks and nuns the right to practice and spread their religion.
