It depends on who you ask
Pale skin is considered beautiful in Asia because it represents social class: pale skin implies that one does not have to work in the sun (eg. farmers) or other lower class jobs
At least that's what I've heard from my Asian grandparents...

I believe they also made a reference to pale skin representing class in a Shakespeare play (Much Ado About Nothing, I believe...forced to read in English class)

It actually used to be that way for a long time in a lot of English speaking countries as well (to say the least). Supposedly the tanning fad started with Coco Chanel coming back from vacation with a tan. Now tan apparently is supposed to represent travel to exotic locations.

Doesn't mean **** when the person is orange though.
