rarity does come off as a bit uptight at times, but her character IS to be the one who desires high style living and elite social class connections, showing that she has very strong desires and goals. she turns her primary passion and hobby, artistry and creativity in the form of dress making, into a lucrative career, so that shows she is able and willing to use her talents and desires to benefit her and drive her success.

and I don't know what you mean by "unable to contribute to equestria", because then by that logic pinkie pie must be an undesirable character, because she contributes just as much, maybe even less, than rarity.

Pinkie Pie definitely contributes. She is a great cook and is very good at keeping up the moral of other ponies. Rarity doesn't do much other than complain and waste natural resources.

well, if you really want to get technical about it, rarity's career would take precedence over a simple cook.

being an artist and creator, whose works are highly sought after and featured amongst general society, means you are a conductor of culture.

fashion is especially important towards culture, because it has to do with significance of identity, as well as how significant figures will be represented in that society.

and that's not even touching on the applications fashion has towards an economy.
