Love both of them,; however the second half of DN feels lower quality than the first.

Oh yeah, I agree. I actually stopped watching it around episode 30 and picked it up again 6 months later but the ending half wasn't that bad. The end also felt like it was a clip on and never really explained Light's family reactions or what the Kira supporters did. But to me, the plot overall was well written, the animation was pretty decent, and the voice actors could not have been better.

I didn't like the Near and Mello plotline. I felt like either Kira or L should have won, not some random 13 year old who shows 3/4 through the series. But, yes it was very well written.

Maybe if it gave more depth to Near's character, to where I could analyze him properly, he might have grown on me. The series did not allow him to do so. I felt as if he was replacing L and the Whammy Orphanage was a last minute thing. However, I view Mello differently. I think it was because of his bravery in the end.

I thought Mello should have won to be honest, but Near did say that Mello did the most of the work...

Ha ha, Matt is the only minor character I really liked. (I don't know if you would consider Matsuda a minor character..) Even though he had like four lines in the anime, I feel as he somehow relates to my favorite characters from different games and anime series. I guess you could say he's an exception.
