Excuse my ignorance but what is SOPA?
User avatar #136 to #130 - randomserb (12/18/2011) [-]
Stop Online Piracy Act. It's basically the US government thinking they own the internet and censoring everything which may or may not contain copyrighted content, including Youtube, 4chan, Reddit, Tumblr, Facebook et cetera.
#133 to #130 - righteousmuffin (12/18/2011) [-]
It's a bill that restricts Internet piracy and copyrighted materials.

Shit guise
Think about it
Hundred of bills fail, and nobody knows about them.
This bill isn't bigger, or higher priority than any other ones
Someone just found out about it and told everyone, then everyone got scared and started posting about it. They tried to pass this bill several times already, I'm sure we're safe.

Friggin FJ, once they have a tiny insight on government, they blow it all out of proportion, often misinterpreting it. You're on the damn internet, an international hub of information, research shit.
#123 to #95 - prisonerofreality (12/18/2011) [-]

Yeah they fail because people oppose them, idiot.
#111 to #106 - tablespoons (12/18/2011) [-]
They fail because they're detrimental to the country, if nobody said anything about the bill it would still fail.

Do you see a protest against every bill that congress looks at?
No?
Fuck anon
#112 to #111 - anonymous (12/18/2011) [-]
might as well never oppose against anything again then is what you're saying..
User avatar #121 to #112 - jjamesgordon (12/18/2011) [-]
No, what he's saying is that at least SOME House Representatives and Senators still have the interests of the people on their minds, rather than lining their own pocket with corporate-funded dollars.
#146 to #121 - shwaaaa (12/18/2011) [-]
You can't just sit back rely on a couple of people *hopefully* preventing something as monstrous as SOPA being passed.

Evidently they DONT have the interests of the people on their minds given that 2 days ago, the house passed the "National Defence Authorization Act". Which allows US citizens to be arrested, detained and tortured indefinitely, without having a trial or charges even brought against them. They've also decided to give themselves the "right" to do this to whoever they please in other countries- i.e they SAY they can legally kidnap non-Americans as well, regardless of the law in said countries.

Wake up. The US is becoming more fascist than democratic, and having such a complacent attitude is precisely what enables this to go ahead.

User avatar #147 to #146 - jjamesgordon (12/18/2011) [-]
Do your research. The Bill of Rights clearly states that we can't be detained or arrested without charge. That bill COULDN'T be passed because it's a direct violation of the Constitution.
#148 to #147 - shwaaaa (12/18/2011) [-]
Oh dear Jesus do YOUR research.

Undermining the constitution is PRECISELY what they are doing, yes it is completely morally and ethically wrong, but the bill effectively declares the US a warzone, so that they are allowed do this under war laws.

"Section 1031 allows for the indefinite detention of U.S. citizens without a trial or hearing"- So you are either telling me, that Section 1031 was either written for fun and they're not being serious, or that it's completely imaginary and I am lying and every other source on the internet is lying and all the 10s of millions of people outrage by this are lying because you say it isnt so???
#115 to #112 - tablespoons (12/18/2011) [-]
In my point of view, everyones chanting "Stop SOPA", when they don't know anything about congress and law. Its unconstitutional, and obviously gonna fail.

Divert your protests elsewhere
