Turning computers off?

Who even does that

My desktop stays on 24/7, I only allow it to turn my monitor off and the hard drive motors when it's been so long. Never standby or hibernate, never shut down. Fun fact: Constant cycling of a computer's power supply will cause damage to your system. Not instantly, mind you, but every time the system is shut down after being on for even the shortest time, the heating/cooling cycle of all of the soldered components wears them out, eventually they will become brittle and crack, causing connections to break.

This takes a long time for just being turned off and on every day, but you can figure that every time your computer is shut off and then turned back on you are subtracting another day of usage from its lifespan on average.

tl;dr, turning off a computer is essentially bad for it.

Do you think that energy (electricity) is for free? Computer will last more than 10 years even if you shut it down every day or not, but you wont use it longer than 5 years, because it will get "old". That heating and cooling cycle isnt a big deal.. Computer parts are heated from 20°C to 60°C and that is a small difference for material damage. Actually some computer components can be only used for a limited period of time. So when you dont turn off your computer, you are damaging it more..

Gee, is electricity free? No it's not, derp. Certain components don't last ten years regardless of how you treat them, most storage medias wear out and at least are noticeably worse off (standard hard disks with moving parts), flash media (SD cards, CF cards, SSDs) are only good for a certain amount of writes (which seem like a lot at first but with constant use, generally only lasts about 2-3 years), optical discs do wear out and whatever.

And components might get "old" but that doesn't mean they go "bad" either. The Pentium D 805 that I'm running in my desktop (Overclocked at 3.12 now on air) will be 7 years old as of next month and still runs games as good as I need them to run paired up with my HD 4850. The motherboard this is all popped in? Released in the later part of 2005. So don't argue about products going "obsolete" either.

There aren't any components I know of that can only be used for a "limited period of time". Any proper operating system will disable hardware that isn't being used (cut power to hard disks, removable drives and other storage media, turn off video processing, and pretty much anything else) to save power and hardware life (Windows has done this since '95, Ubuntu does this now and so does Mac OS).

Leaving it on damages it no more than turning it off every day. Not that the amount even matters. Like I told the other guy, it really doesn't make fuck all difference. It's an excuse for me to leave my computer on and I'm okay with that.

If you pay your own electric bill like I do, I'm sure you do whatever the fuck you want with your electricity too.

I upgrade as quickly as possible but hey, I'm poor. I still use components that were new 5-6 years ago.

Like I said, it's only essentially bad for the computer to turn it off on and every day. I only use it as an excuse to leave mine on all the time. How much does it probably matter? Fuck all. Haha.
