I found it easier to use one 9v battery and a 5v voltage regulator. No complex DC step-up circuits to deal with.

Doesn't work that way, you would wire them in series to get 3V and capacity remains constant (3000mAh for energizer lithiums) but yeah, it works.
Just get a dc->dc boost converter from ebay, it will cost less than the components if you wanted to build it yourself.

yeah you're right. i thought of that after i posted my comment. but also, the width of the can is enough to fit the batteries like this [ |||| ] so you could stick 4 in there and get 6 volts.

Makes the dc/dc converter work harder (more variation between input and output = more efficiency)
You would be better to parallel 2 sets of 2 in series.
That would give you a good amount of juice.
I personally like the 18650 powered "chargers"
2400mAh in a good trustfire (protected), and they are only $10 for 2 batteries that you can charge a thousand times.
The charger that I got is ~$20 and has adapters for my cell, ipod, psp, usb, etc...
Go to deal extreme dot com, it comes in a zip up case. The charger tor the 18650s is about 7 bucks.

Found a 1.5 to 5v 500 mAh step up booster on ebay. Prolly gonna get like 6 1xAA battery holders and try to cram in as much as i can in the tin. Robbing a usb port from an old comp. This is happening.

I'm happy with the 18650s because I use them in my lasers and flashlights already.
