Idiotas.

BECAUSE THEY'RE DIPSHITS THAT'S WHY!
Edit - Everyone STFU about silencers being expensive, hard to find and not working how they are portrayed to in movies. It was a joke and a good idea if it actually worked.

Not really, when its quiet, its still shockingly loud, the only thing a silencer is really good for are loud combat zones. :I

one does not simply find a silencer........

Indeed.
User avatar #114 - ivanabohner (12/11/2011) [-]
well maybe because idotas like you who play video games believe silencers are compleatly silent...they still make a loud crack, because the bullet is cutting through the air, regaurdless of the silencer or not. here is my proof. good day sir, and may you take an arrow to the knee

He is using wrong ammunition, good Sir or Ma'am.
And my point is proven by the fact that you can hear the "loud crack".

Here is a good video of properly silenced and loaded gun.

i see, i had wondered if ammunition might change the effectiveness of a silencer, nifty that it does.
User avatar #120 to #114 - victoryismine (12/11/2011) [-]
The only video games I play are Mario Kart on Wii and Sims 2 on my computer. I know nothing about guns, it's just that in movies and TV shows sliencers are portrayed to completely silence the gun, thus my idea.
User avatar #117 to #114 - ivanabohner (12/11/2011) [-]
i also believe tho, im not ceirtain that a silencer is more for the user rather then undetectability. it seems as tho in the video i replied with, that the overall crack is the same, but when he fires a round, the sound is less damaging to the ears....tho i stand to be corrected or not, im not a gun expert
#112 - bigralf (12/11/2011) [-]
well they mostly have shotguns and high powered rifles. even if you suppress a high powered rifle the bullet makes a sonic boom in flight (that crack) which cant be silenced. but aside from that they should suppress all their pistols. except silencers are illegal or ridiculously hard to come by. usually only military or swat have them
#137 to #112 - lovelessk (12/11/2011) [-]
Not at all. I own two and most of my friends shoot with them.

Suppressors are an NFA item in the United States and ownership is up to your individual state. On the feral level, you have to follow the same laws you would for anything under the 86 ban.
#146 to #137 - bigralf (12/11/2011) [-]
ah here in florida in order to get suppressors aside from a 200 dollar tax stamp you need permission from the chief of police.
#153 to #146 - lovelessk (12/12/2011) [-]
That's the way it works in most states. CLEO is one route. You can also set up a trust.

Florida and Texas share the same laws when it comes to suppressors. I know Texas allows us to hunt Hogs with them. No clue about Florida on that.

I went the trust route like many folks because CLEO don't like to sign off.

Suppressed .22 and 9mm have been the most fun for me. Anything that likes to stay supersonic to stay stable just isn't much fun.
#111 - anonymous (12/11/2011) [-]
Maybe, because it's a damn TV SHOW.
User avatar #107 - perkuna ONLINE (12/11/2011) [-]
You can make a silencer/supressor out of a plastic soda bottle, works fine too for a couple of rounds..
However, if you use normal ammunition instead of subsonic ammunition, the break of sound barrier negates the most effects of said devices..

tl;dr Factory made and home made silencers need proper ammunition to work.
User avatar #110 to #107 - dogsbane (12/11/2011) [-]
not only that but you need a fairly large silencer to actually make it silent even with the right ammo . otherwise it's really just a bit muffled
User avatar #129 to #110 - perkuna ONLINE (12/11/2011) [-]
Not going to argue about that..
But my point was that they would also need the right ammunition even though they would
have the silencers..
Yes, it would be rather smart to use silencers, but dunno how often you can find subsonics
laying around..
They could do subsonics by themselves, but do they have the knowledge..?
User avatar #130 to #129 - dogsbane (12/11/2011) [-]
oh I know what you meant I was just adding extra info for the hell of it . and I doubt they would know how to do subsonic rounds or at least not the vast majority and I seriously doubt the writers know they even exist .
User avatar #131 to #130 - perkuna ONLINE (12/11/2011) [-]
So, we agree on the subject? :D
And I just was clarifying my point, if somebody didn't get it..
Anyways, thumbs for you good Sir.

They just make the gun sound like a smaller gun that about fucken it. I have seen a pistol suppressor and I still had to wear my headphones. Also not many people own supporessors because they are damn expensive so demand is low leading to not having many lying around to find.
User avatar #106 to #103 - kumabear ONLINE (12/11/2011) [-]
i kinda agree, but dumbass, its a tv show, they could do anything they want to, if they wanted to make it a world where theres people who own silenced guns fuckin everywhere that left them lying around then they would, if they wanna make the silencers give that little tick they give in the movies, they could, its a fiction show, i mean really, if you're going for realism why pick this? its a show in which the military was overrun by zombies, but a group of like 10 people can take them on, you gotta be fucking kidding me if you're going for logic in a show like this
#113 to #106 - bigralf (12/11/2011) [-]
the reason why the military was overrun but a small group manages to survive, is because at first response the military had no intel about what was going on. for all they knew they were dealing with rioters. also military personnel are trained to aim for center of mass. it takes a while to adapt to only hitting head shots. and they probably got hit by a big swarm vs the group is staying a way from high population areas. its a great show based of a great comic book
User avatar #154 to #113 - kumabear ONLINE (12/12/2011) [-]
we are trained for center mass yes, but we are also aware of fictional zombies and what they look like, were not complete and utter boneheads, and a headshot, while difficult, is of no consequence when you have a tank.
#165 to #154 - bigralf (12/12/2011) [-]
thing is with zombies, people get bit, get away, hide in their apartment, die and become a trap for anyone entering that apartment. tanks are great for taking out vehicles buildings. the problem is abandoned vehicles in city streets makes for quite a bumpy ride and sure zombies cant get in but will follow you till you run out of fuel. again were talking millions (billions if you live in india or china) of zombies that require the brain to be destroyed. tanks not so much. sharpshooters positioned on roof tops would be better than a squad of tanks.
User avatar #169 to #165 - kumabear ONLINE (12/13/2011) [-]
well what are we talking about as far as a squad of tanks? a squad of six to eight in close proximity with ma deuces and mini guns up on the top would be more than a match for a large group, all they gotta do is sit steady and keep rotating till they run out of ammunition, then drop into the tank and roll through what is left, tanks have multiple strategies for attack, so escaping an area of infected wouldn't be too hard for a good tanker
#171 to #169 - bigralf (12/13/2011) [-]
im talking about a sweep and clear of every building withing an area. granted tanks would be able to incapacitate large groups. but then your stuck with torsos slowly crawling at you. and were talking a city population slowly following your tank squad. tanks are loud some are fast but they're range isnt very far. refueling would be a nightmare
User avatar #172 to #171 - kumabear ONLINE (12/13/2011) [-]
A sweep and clear of every building? If there was even a concern of there being zombies trapped in a building, the ideal course of action would be planting heavy explosives and leveling the building, it gets rid of all margin for error as any zombie inside would be crushed or blown to bits, depending on where they were
#173 to #172 - bigralf (12/14/2011) [-]
leveling a whole building to kill anywhere from 50 to 100 zombies? shit that would take care of new york
User avatar #174 to #173 - kumabear ONLINE (12/14/2011) [-]
assuming that its something like the walking dead where theres almost no more living in the major cities, with the exception of people like the Latinos who are taking care of the elderly in Atlanta, but they have their own building anyway, it wouldn't really be an issue of saving the buildings, but if were talking theres still hundreds of living inside you would definitely need to be more careful, a small tactical team goes in, 4-5 men, all other exits are covered, those who are clean are marked and sent for further examination, all others are terminated, have a nice day folks we've ended the apocalypse

in most of them zombie movies and shows, they're attracted to loud noises. i always wondered why the people who are trying to survive after the initial outbreak don't find a crow scarer. (that device they use on farms that fires a blank shotgun shell every few minutes). they could let it run for a day or two and then when all the zombies gather, they could set off a bomb at the location and take most of the zombies in the area at once.
User avatar #104 to #100 - victoryismine (12/11/2011) [-]
You sir, have an epic mind.
User avatar #105 to #104 - puggles (12/11/2011) [-]
thanks. my wife and i enjoy picking apart plot lines in movies and shows (after we've enjoyed them) and we're always amazed at how often the people in zombie movies don't use the zombies' behaviors against them.
User avatar #118 to #105 - victoryismine (12/11/2011) [-]
IKR. Stupid overpaid actors and writers.
#116 to #105 - bigralf (12/11/2011) [-]
problem with that is you'd need someone who knows how to make a fertilizer bomb with remote detonation. not to mention im sure places with a crow scarer are pretty solitary places so you might get around fifty of them.
User avatar #134 to #116 - puggles (12/11/2011) [-]
good point, but based on my base of friends, you'd think that out of that many people at least one would know how to make a decent bomb (don't most of us, after all?). plus crow scarers, while not exactly pocket size, are portable and could be taken to a less remote place.
#145 to #134 - bigralf (12/11/2011) [-]
true but if youve read the zombie survival guide you would know how poor explosions are at zombie elimination. the majority of them will just be crippled and become zombie landmines to anyone passing by
User avatar #98 - trawllor (12/11/2011) [-]
ACTUALLY, a home made supressor is easy and cheap to make. just need a hardware store and a machine shop really...

which they are lacking of on the farm house they have been on the WHOLE second season.

True, but you see instead of it echoing for a mile or however far it makes it disperse alot quicker. So lets say gun get fired and the sound disappears at 1000 yards. with a silencer it disappears at 100 yards.

(these arent really numbers, just examples.)

#89 to #87 - Frobias (12/11/2011) [-]
considering the amount of silencers, guns, and ammunition I keep hearing about getting seized in my city, it shouldn't really be thaaaaat hard to find them. Just hard to get in and out of a major metropolitan location, like on one of the first episodes
User avatar #83 - easyglue (12/11/2011) [-]
For most guns, silencers do not reduce the noise to an unhearable level. it is still very audible from 30-40 feat away, silencers just reduce the range the sound travels
User avatar #85 to #83 - easyglue (12/11/2011) [-]
Actually probably a lot less than 30-40, its late and i cant think straight
#86 to #85 - carneymaster ONLINE (12/11/2011) [-]
yeah it only takes it down like 20-30 decibels. not alot considering how loud a gun is.

You just couldn't be more wrong kid.

I'm not making fun of you or giving you a hard time; but, the internet changed the intelligence game 100%. We used to read Jane's just to get a glimpse of the toys being produced.

If it's made in America, it's public. We have projects running all the time. But our ground forces get supported mainly by DARPA toys now. DARPA happens to be very public. That happens when you run contests to see who can make the coolest toys.

Suppressors aren't complicated. I own a few. There is no secret break-the-laws-of-physics version out there. You have baffles and you have barrels and you launch a metal projectile through both. The only big change was the use of titanium and that's just to cut weight.
