You know, I'm
not
a Christian (I do believe in God, but not in a very rigid way), but whenever I see these stupid-ass posts on here mocking religion, I want to jump in and defend it. It deserves better than this. If you really want to criticize or satirize Christianity, there are a whole SLEW of bloody, pointless religious wars and horrible, intolerant bigots out there you could be skewering; why do people trot out this ******* juvenile "LOLZ what kinda moron could believe that" excuse for an argument over and over?
Frankly, one of the reasons I
don't
belong to any organized religion is that I don't agree with a lot of the ways they run things; but I think there's a LOT to be said for believing in something greater than yourself. It encourages you to better yourself, to look for meaning in the simpler parts of life, and to respect people for the good in them. Our cultural values nowadays are so ********* it's not even funny, and you see it on this site as much as anywhere: we want to act like we're too cool to care about other people, we want to live like nothing matters but our own pleasure Right This Second, and we want to brush off the ideas of faith and deep meaning as being for weak-minded lunatics who can't "handle" the pressures of life. And then we wonder why our art consists of regurgitated hipster trash, why our music consists of over-synthesized empty drivel, why fewer relationships work out and fewer friendships have depth than ever before - and why, as a result, we're so stressed out all the time. It's important to believe in something, and to stick by it - maybe not a god or a holy book, if those things don't suit you, but SOMETHING - and if more people don't start to realize that, I think we're in for a rude awakening pretty goddamn soon.

Though, is the sacrifice worth the reward?
By a strong belief you can gain comfort, pride, a goal in life, confidence and even a new personality. Which in itself is really good! Everyone should have a belief in something!
But here comes the problem...
When you are faithful to your belief you will of course feel a VERY strong urge to fight for it, and many value this belief higher than anything else. Including others lives. Just take a look at Al-quida, Anders Breivik, the crusades in the middleages or anything of the sort, unfortunately there are many that could be named. The religous beliefs are convinced that there is a higher power telling them what life is and how it should be lived out, and what you have to do to earn this life. This makes it very easy to manipulate, some have claimed that they are the messengers of God the allmighty and POOF full power over all the believers.
I do agree with you on the mindless mocking of religions though, as there are so many good reasons to seal it under the earth for good and talking none-sense only makes it easier to defend.
My point is, have a belief, fight for it! But for god´s sake - oh the irony - manage your values and let your faith be your own so we can leave this era of ignorance and amaurosis behind us. We are simply not that gullible anymore... I wish.

You can say what you want about jesus, but everyone mocked him and called him stupid etc... And now he is the most important person and wisest person in history, God or not.

Nice post Arachnid, you seem intelligent. I recommend checking out CoAlpha, a forum about culture and history. (google it, I can't link here)

I didn't read all of it, but for realz. It's one thing to make a valid point, but it's just stupid to say "witty" things that have no logical value.
