Okay *******, listen to this. Imagine a ring. A ring made out of a plastic. But it is HUGE, like can easily take up a backyard. Okay so not huge but big enough to not fit into a house, maybe make bigger "rings" that are hundreds of feet tall. They are hollow. They contain paddle wheels inside of them (think of a water wheel) and we utilize these wheels like we do for a turbine or how we use them in the Hoover Dam to generate hydro electricity. But **** water. We use a ferrofluid mix. What is that? Well it can be made at home with vegetable oil and toner. It's basically a liquid with high magnetic properties. And what is the purpose of this ******** you ask? Because we have multiple paddle-wheel turbines generating electricity from this magnetic fluid being drug up to the top of this circular ring and then gravity bringing back down while it passes through all the other paddle wheel turbines. How do we get a magnet on the outside to pull this fluid up? With the power generated from one turbine to run a machine that moves this magnet up, away, and back to the bottom of the ring to collect. Please, anyone else want to solve an energy crisis with some troll physics? I don't really even give half a **** if I can make any money out of this, I'd just like to solve a problem.

How bout this? The problem with today's solar panels is that they are only effective for a specific set of wavelengths. To increase the amount of the light we can transfer into electricity is:
1. Focus the light with a parabolic mirror.
2. Pass the light through a prism and let that split light hit a surface that you can attach solar panels to.
3. Test to see which currently available panels work best across different ranges of wavelengths. Set them all up accordingly and you'll be taking full advantage of the spectrum instead of just like 20% as is the case with top of the line solar panels used by themselves.

Wikipedia says this can result in at least double the output/ sq. ft. of light exposure but the links don't work and there is no other mention of this that I can find on the internet.

Well of course. I already have tried and proved the theory of the ferrofluid passing through the ring via magnet (a $1 Wii steering wheel, fluid concoction, and a neodymium magnet) and how it can spin a turbine (some wooden paddle wheels from a model of a grain mill) and that all so far works. Now to just add the technology of the hydroelectric turbines and have someone design the magnet's retracting arm.

But is the power the turbine generates powerful enough to power the magnet?
Are we talking electromagnet, or just a magnet on a robotic arm?

All you would need is a high powered magnet. And yes, if built on a large scale (let not the hundred foot scale). If you had a design that could make that fluid have even close to the power of the water being pushed through the Hoover then you have more electricity than you could ask for. The Dam powers most of Las Vegas (as cited in Fallout New Vegas and is quite true.) and that dam only has 17 generators. 17. 17. That's a LOT of power coming out of just 17 generators. Now think, if we could even get half of that energy that is in that water spilling through those turbines for the generator you could EASILY power an entire city from a single one of these "Ferrorings". Just one. And if it was a hundred feet tall and a couple hundred (or even miles) across would it really be any bigger than your average Las Brisas or any other coal or nuclear plant?

But then couldn't you just use normal water with a big bucket instead of a magnet, then?

That would require human effort. Plus what about the excess water? Something like this you could stick into the ground and it'll run self-sufficient forever and all you had to do is plug it into a grid. No human work what so ever except for cleaning and maintenance.

I meant an automated bucket, like on a big robot arm, lowering down and scooping up water and refilling the generator.
Meh. I like this magnet idea but for some reason I just know it wouldn't work.

Your idea violates the law of conservation of energy. Moving the magnet would still require energy.

Which is why one generator would power an arm that the magnet is attached to that would carry the ferrofluid up to the top of this ring and drop it and the arm will retract and be laying at the bottom of this ring to collect the fluid again and repeat.

That's not the point; the amount of energy in a closed system remains constant. It is physically impossible to create energy from nothing. In your hypothetical invention, the power required to move the magnet would be at best (assuming 100% efficiency, which is pretty much impossible) equal to the power generated by the turbine, resulting in net energy gain ≤ 0.
