This year I drew the short straw and was handing out candy. Since I live in a relatively new and tightly
packed neighborhood, handing out candy meant I couldn' t even close my door between the choruses of
Trick or treat", I had a giant tub of candy for the kids and gave a small handful to each. But I was
approached by a little kid in a grim reaper' s costume. Hood down Over his skull mask, scythe otter his
shoulder and feet completely covered by his robe he looked rather cool. Without a word he held out a
little burlap bag marked "Souls", It was empty, so I felt a twinge of excitement for being the first house
this kid had visited despite being in the middle of the neighborhood. Wanting to start him off on a good
foot I scooped up a bunch of candy with both hands and poured it into his bag. He nodded, pleased and
moved silently down my walkway. Girls in glittering fairy outfits came running up, but as I gave them
their candy I watched the Grim Reaper go to his mother, who was waiting on the sidewalk, holding the
handle to a wagon with a very full trashbag. Little Grim dumped his bag of souls into the bag and
proceeded to the next house "empty handed",
