“You’re tall! Do you play basketball?”
Seriously? Thank you for pointing out the fact that I’m tall. I never knew that. Thank you for making an assumption about me based on my physical body. That was nice of you. I can’t understand why people don’t realize that this is offensive. Most people want to be normal…and tall isn’t normal. I stand at over 6’5”, and I’d gladly drop down a few inches. Seriously? Thank you for pointing out the fact that I’m tall. I never knew that. Thank you for making an assumption about me based on my physical body. That was nice of you. I can’t understand why people don’t realize that this is offensive. Most people want to be normal…and tall isn’t normal. I stand at over 6’5”, and I’d gladly drop down a few inches. However, without severely damaging my body this is impossible.
This very fact is why calling someone tall is offensive. THEY CAN’T CHANGE IT. I’m tall, and I hate being tall. It’s annoying, but I can’t do anything about it. So when somebody comes up to me and points out that I’m tall, something I don’t want to be, it is highly offensive. Calling someone tall is WORSE than walking up to someone and saying “You’re fat. Do you eat donuts every day?” Why, do you ask? BECAUSE PEOPLE CAN CHANGE THE FACT THAT THEY’RE FAT! A little exercise does the trick. Tall people can’t change themselves.
Now think about it…you wouldn’t walk up to someone who’s ugly and tell them that. You wouldn’t walk up to someone who’s retarded and say “You’re retarded!” You wouldn’t walk up to someone who’s crippled and say “You’re crippled. Do you participate in the special Olympics?” Why would you walk up to someone who’s tall, a physical condition such as being crippled or ugly, and do the same?
My goal with this writing is to eliminate at least a few people from going around to tall people and idiotically saying “Ohhh you’re tall do you play basketball!?!?! HEHEHE”. NO. Don’t point out that fact. I don’t want to be tall, and I don’t want to have someone tell me that I am. Oh, and by the way, I don’t play basketball – I play guitar and piano, and have been for 10 years.
