Thank you! It's been irking me for a while now, making me itch whenever someone posts an image macro and calls it a meme. And I once had an argument with a guy who said rage faces were memes. His argument? "Memes are faces with convey an emotion." I wanted to slap him through the monitor.

Perhaps you are of a similar spirit to George Orwell, he also was irked by the improper usage of words.

If you study Christian theology, the hyper-conservative Fundamentalists that are so common (in the US, at least, can't speak for nations I've never visited) will become even more irritating. In short, errors such as this make me want to thump the Bible-Thumpers.

Believe me, everyone had that particular problem. If you are skilled at something, or knowledgeable in a particular subject, then it starts to feel like everyone else is really, really thick.

Of course, they're probably thinking the exact same thing, although what is easy to them may be incomprehensible to you.

Well, maybe one person gets it wrong, saying it to someone. The recipient of the error might think that the person who said it was actually right, thinking they're in the wrong, and continue to use that word instead. And repeat.
Or maybe they're idiots. Who knows?

That first one is pretty accurate, in my experience. Unfortunately, we also have idiots who, upon hearing a new word, don't look it up.

Others will just water down the meaning until it's lost all of its original subtext.
Using the word "literally" as nothing more than an emphatic for an example, rather than "implying no allusions or metaphors are being made, speaking plainly & directly".

Or they use it just to add emphasis, as if it had no more meaning than "really" or "very".
Similar to the way "totally" goes.

I'm doing a project on this, and I wonder...many people consider a Meme to be all of the things you have mentioned. I mean if people see a random image that is used to express a behavior or an idea, it would be considered a meme regardless of whether it has a text or not. Because it seems to me that so many people have started using what you call Internet Macros, that they have turned them into memes, right?

This is incorrect. An image macro is just text laid over an image, and a meme doesn't have to be spread over the internet. What you called an image macro is actually an advice animal, and what you called a meme is actually an internet meme.

It's not incorrect in the slightest. An "advice animal" is a special case of image macro (and, going by KYM's definition, seems to include pretty much every image macro anyway, so the difference is moot).

Also, since this is, you know, the internet, where we discuss the culture of the internet, whenever we discuss memes (especially in the context of internet culture, such as this image right here, which discusses internet phenomena) it's kind of implicit that we're discussing internet memes specifically.

Annoys me that people are getting this wrong.
