I remember learning in elementary school that we have a different measuring/weighing system than everyone else, and I was like, "but... why?" And to this day I'm afraid to leave the country in fear of doing math :I

I really do wish we could go metric. All my science classes made me use it.

5 dollar foot long? OHHH you mean the 5 dollar 0.3048 meter long
User avatar #240 - bagofshenanigans (09/30/2011) [+] (2 replies)
15 feet? Oh, you mean 4.572 meters.

Works both ways. Besides, what would we call the 5-dollar foot long?

(This comment is a joke by the way, because there will be people too dumb to see that.)

In all technicality, the US adopted the Metric System in 1878 as one of the original signers of the Meter Convention. The US did not restrict the use of the Imperial system, which is why so many civilians know it as their primary measuring system. When it comes to trade, government work, and Military operations, the US uses metric (Especially in joint operations with our allies).

A lot of people do not seem to know this.
