There is a history lesson to be made here.. but I am far too tired to say it all.. Long story short, the vikings tricked everyone by switching the names to keep their homeland safe.

Fact Time:
Greenland and Iceland were both found by the Vikings of Leif Ericson a couple of decades after the year 1000. Finding Greenland was covered in Ice and Iceland was green as all hell, they knew that concerning the size of the small green island compared to the size of the giant arctic tundra, they knew that sea travelers would want to settle the small green island. Wanting it all for themselves, they decided to name The Small island Iceland to keep away non-Ericson clan settlers, and they named the Large Frozen island Greenland, all so that settlers would want to move there, and when they would arrive, they'd find it very fucking cold and freezing, and the Viking's could keep the good land on Iceland.

But Do You know what this means?

That's Right: Vikings were some of History's First Trolls.

it was the vikings that named it this so people would go to "greenland" and end up in a iceland.

Here let me explain. (Icelandic BTW)

Iceland: So this guy named Hrafna-Flóki finds Iceland and is all "Aww yeah, this shit's awesome". He made the mistake of not collecting hay before the winter so his creatures (sheep, horses etc.) died, so he fucking raged and named Iceland, Iceland.

Greenland: A guy named Eiríkur Rauði, went sailing from Iceland and he finds this green valley, and he's all this is awesome and names Greenland, Greenland. He went back to gather some people and get some more people to join him thinking Greenland was green. He went back with a bunch of people but never found the valley again and all he could find was ice.

History lesson's done.

something about vikings finding them both. they were named so people wouldn't want to go to iceland, so he could have it to himself.

Since Greenland was discovered by Erik the Red and named it that to trick others into expecting lush fields but finding nothing but ice and being stranded there. Iceland was the same reason but for the opposite purpose, to prevent people from going there by making it sound like there is nothing but ice. Thank you AP Euro

Here is why:
The Vikings ventured to Iceland, after Greenland had been discovered. He (Erik The Red) fooled that Scandinavians into thinking what we now know as Greenland, was very green and lush, while he named the island that is ACTUALLY green and lush Iceland. He tricked the Scandinavians into thinking that Greeland was the nice place to go, while the Viking could have Iceland all to theirselves because no Scandinavian would want to go to a place named "Iceland". I'm sure my story isn't 100% correct, so don't bitch about it. I'm only using my knowledge from my World History class.

Quick lesson, the vikings named Greenland like that so that people would go to the icy one, and Iceland so that people would stay away from their land.
