The T-45d is the only one in the discussion. While the T-51b is really cool and all, it's really new and has only one look, while the T-45d is the one that was originally used as power armor for the original fallout and fallout 2.

I thought that the T-45d was the original power armor used in the series and the T-51b was introduced in fallout 3 with the "you gotta shoot em in the head" quest. It's found as an experimental power armor in fort Constantine.

You're partially right, you do find a suit of T-51b power armor in that quest, but it wasn't exactly experimental. The T-45d was the first power armor used by the American military, but it was replaced by the T-51b because it was stronger, allowed the user to be more agile, and took less power to operate. The Brotherhood uses T-51b power armor in most areas, but detachments in more remote areas (capital wasteland) have to rely on the older T-45d armor.
