If you remove the rings, nothing will happen. It doesn't stretch their spine, the weight of the rings pushes down their rib cage and shoulders. They take them off every now and then to reshape them.

No, it's real. Part of women's oppression as an ornament. Also, if she's found cheating on her husband, they remove the rings and the neck muscles collapse, ultimately killing the offending girl. Must itch like hell...
