It's because your ears and throat are connected by the Eustacian canal (probably spelled wrong) so if you push too deep, it pushes air into your throat, causing annoyance which makes you cough.

I like the feeling when the water drips out your ear after it's been in there for while. You guys know what I'm talking about... you feel it slowly coming out, and its kinda warmish, and it feels tingly. ITS AMAZING!!!
