Actually, in the US many join the military for the money, and not because they "love their country". It's sometimes the only thing a person can do in order to support a family or acquire citizenship.

No but they'll list the name. You'll be reminded. Then every time they list more names you remember your family members death. If they list soldiers that die everyday then you remember more and more and more.

The family knew that the soldier was going in for the good of their country the moment they knew the soldier signed up. Doesn't mean they want to keep remembering they lost a loved one. They have to constantly remember all the things they never said, and everything they regret saying. They know exactly what they lost, and don't want everyone else feeling sorry for them about it.
