I agree, the locomotives of old look quite impressive. However, the method of energy conversion they use is actuall rather inefficient and not exactly cost-effective. Today's diesel-electric ones produce MUCH more torque at startup and therefore have greater acceleration rates. Also, they are capable of pulling far larger loads far greater distances. There are a great many other advantages, but I cannot think properly right now and therefore must say good day to you.

In the end, today's trains do not posses the looks or romanticized notions of the wild western trains, but they are much more effective from a business's perspective.
