okay then it hasnt been proven but when has 'God' ever helped anyone? why do we have poverty and war? and i know people talk about this all the time but its true, religion is the cause af war and i don't see the point in it but if you want to believe in a god thats fine personally i think its stupid though.

I'm not gonna fly into a religious act right now, but all I can say is that God allows war to put us through some hardship.
Jus' sayin'.
I respect your opinion, as you should respect my own, lets just leave it where it is before it gets bigger.

Well, basically you have to realize and accept the fact that while religious people can't prove to atheists like us that a god exists, we also can't prove that a god does not exist. That is a whole separate issue from how religion makes people act. I'm sure you know religious people that you're close with and ones you can't stand. I have it even in my family. My uncle is a right wing, ultraconservative Christian nutcase and I want to punch him every time he brings it up. However my mom is very religious, but accepts that I don't go to church with her or anything, doesn't try to shove it down people's throats, has her own opinions even if they are opposite the church's and she works with a lot of great charities.

I understand. I know I went way off my original topic there, but I agree with you that I don't think a god makes sense either. My favorite statements on the matter, there's a good chance you've heard it before, is from Epicurius
"Is God willing to prevent evil, but not able?
Then he is not omnipotent.
Is he able, but not willing?
Then he is malevolent.
Is he both able and willing?
Then whence cometh evil?
Is he neither able nor willing?
Then why call him God?"

no i've never heard it before but it is true personally i think God was made up by someone in desperate need of help and when he prayed his life turned around of his own accord and i also think jesus was a man who did something good for people ages ago and as the story has passed through time and bits have been added so it has got out of hand.

Are you talking about Religion or Theism? Because of course if you were talking about religion as a whole I'd have to ask why you were saying that Buddhism is a root of evil when it gives invaluable spiritual for nothing more than scraps of food, offers free retreats to anyone who can get there, teaches that bad karma can never be undone so doesn't use repentance as a blackmailing weapon, has never gone to war with anyone (although several Chinese campaigns have wrongly used Buddhism as a spiritual meat shield) and continually gives to as many people as possible without ever expecting anything in return. I hope it's the latter of those two options...

Both... Im not talkin about Buddhism but im not talkin about a specific religion either. Im not goin into all this religion crap .... Everyone has their opinion, people can believe what they believe but i believe that some religions can go too far and cause war about 'Gods'

And that applies to everyone on both sides of the argument who have seemingly mistaken religion with theism. I'm not attacking anyone, I'm just trying to clear up what seems to be an error.

I agree. Religion is the cause of war and distress. If a religion didn't exist, 9/11 wouldn't have happened because the terrorists responsible believed they would go to heaven after doing so. I think God was just a scam to get people some money

You're not looking at the factors. God is a belief - like Santa. As you grow older, you realize there's no Santa; in fact, it was made up by your parents, passed down generation to generation. Religion is exactly the same, except you don't know the truth for sure until after your death.

wow to atheists.. first off im sorry that you cant believe in anthing other than u.. to think that we r simply born and die and thats the end, wow that gives me more reason to live to know that there is nothing after to look forward to. there are so many things in life that can not be explained such as miracles "Science FAIL" plz explain oh wait you cant so dont bother trying. An answer to y god supposedly lets hunger and war go on well idk but what have u done to help? have u donated to needy children over seas? if everyone actually help instead of being selfish there would be no hunger, another Atheist "FAIL" .war is a different story I can not explain it, but i doesnt matter if there wasnt religion ppl would still find a reason to fight.

Firstly I do donate to charity and secondly i do agree that there would be wars if there was no religion but most wars are caused by religion, but i do believe there is no god, he is meant to be amazing and able to perform miracles but then the world would be perfect and it isn't i personally don't believe in god because to many bad things have happened in my life, i have never been a bad person and i used to believe in god i have recently stopped because of the problems i have had.

What reason is there to think that there is an afterlife? Someone told you so? Good reason. A book told you so? i just read a book that said that it was possible to fly around on a broom stick. that seems MUCH more possible than an afterlife.

Christian Fail...you assume that the only people that give to charity are religious, just because you don't believe in god doesn't make you heartless. And you are right, even if there wasn't religion there would still be war over territory and money, but not a war that lasts 2000 years.

i agree with the post tbh

as religion has slowed down our understanding of everything. look at the last 100years, advancements have gone thru the roof, and religion has fallen into the shadow's showing its a load of rubbish saying god has a plan for us all...

meh

its fine to figure out things with science. Saying that something such as god does not exist because you can explain somethings, is just kinda ignorant. we make things everyday and sell it, when the person buys it they don't always know who made it if the tag or brand is not on there but that doesn't mean that the person who made it doesn't exist. btw your really gonna get me on a spelling error? also saying "its God's creation" doesn't even work with the argument. it's saying that they use religion to explain things that they don't understand but many things that god has made can be explained such as the human body or anything really. just cause u understand something doesnt mean there wasnt something there to make it possible to recreate.

im not saying science is always wrong im merely pointing out that using science as a way to bash religion is wrong and has errors and science can not explain everything....btw how do i make Christians look bad? i am christian and i was standing up 4 what i believe. btw i consider it more of a relation ship with god the term Christianity is just a way to specify more so what i believe

Of course scientists don't have all the answers...but using the scientific method to try and formulate how our universe works seems to be much better than just explaining it away via "It is God's creation"..... on another note: relation ship??? wtf

religion is the opposite of answers. Its thinking there are answers when there isnt any real hint that there are any.

I like the example 'After a hurricane there is a rainbow'. Thats nice, one causes damage and loss of life while the other looks purdy. If thats a sign of divine benevolence I say we send haiti a nice painting instead of aid.

Religions are successful cults. When you hear about the cults with mass suicides or anything, those people believed in their leaders and "gods" as strongly, if not stronger than, most religious people. They are just small in number and not mainstream, so they are viewed as crazy. When enough people believe it, it becomes viewed as true, or at least acceptable.
