Because if it had fixed legs, it would be impossible to use in a compact manner (in an alcove, stacked efficiently) without snapping the legs off. And if it had folding legs, it would be unable to lift itself to avoid the coffee, defeating the purpose.

With mechanical legs you can use it in either orientation. Stacked compactly, standing safely, or sitting compactly with coffee avoidance measures.

The only part of this device I never got was why it lifted up so that any liquid that may have gotten into the case would drip back into the components and ruin the whole device. Wouldn't it have been more prudent to have the back legs lift up first, thus directing any liquid that may have gotten inside of the case up the front, and out, minimizing the amount of the device the would actually get wet?
