The USA draw a red line when they said that no chemical weapons would be acceptable in Syria. Now it has happened(or so they say) and USA has two choises. To keep their word and show the world and their enemies(Iran, North Korea) that the USA will take action when someone break's their demands, or they wont attack syria and the world will know that the USA didn't keep their promise to strike at any nation using chemical weapons. I think that a US attack will be useless, but I think that the USA cant back down when they said that they would attack if they were to use chemical weapons, To back down is a sign of weakness sadly.
User avatar #73 to #59 - TARDIS (08/31/2013) [-]
I say we send in a navy seal, snipe who ever is in charged of their chemical weapons. Then Obama calls Syria and say "Do I make my self clear?"

We don't go to war, but still send a message.
#178 to #73 - gerfox (09/01/2013) [-]
Uhmm... They are in the middle of a civil war, do you think they give a **** about a death? Or even worse, they could be angered to more excessive use of chemical weapons.
User avatar #77 to #73 - boredatschoolguy (08/31/2013) [-]
I wish it were that easy. They got many chemical plants and if the US send ground personell the ''world'' will look at it as horrible compared to bombing theme. There is no logic behind that, but that is how most people look at the situation today....

How about America just says " **** it" and not care?
#164 to #59 - anon (09/01/2013) [-]
To acknowledge its weakness is in itself a strength. There's a time for everything, and right now, America needs time to tend to its own wounds more than anything. At least that's my opinion.
#217 to #164 - anon (09/01/2013) [-]
to be the self appointed and widely accepted protector of the worlds small people you must accept the burdens it entitles, no we can not afford another military engagement, but we cannot allow people to be subjected to chemical attacks, a civil war is something most/all countries have gone through and it is not really our position to get involved militarily, however, with the use of intolerable weapons/ inhumane actions it becomes our business. weakness and appeasement cause dictators to grow more confident and more ambitious when shown any form of submission. we MUST not back down, to do so would be to let these people who want nothing more than a better life to be subjected to more potential chemical warfare.

Why is the spy shaking his head? France is the ONLY country actually wholeheartedly supporting the US in this one.
User avatar #91 to #25 - hawaiianhappysauce (09/01/2013) [-]
I actually wonder why this is so... I know France had important ties in Lybia, perhaps the same is true for Syria?
User avatar #358 to #91 - gammajk (09/01/2013) [-]
I looked into it, and Syria was a French mandate after WWI up until 1943 when their troops completely left. Not sure if that's relevant and I don't feel like looking more into it because its 3 AM, but interesting nonetheless.
User avatar #359 to #358 - hawaiianhappysauce (09/01/2013) [-]
Why am I not surprised. I bet if France didn't have ties like they didn't with Iraq they wouldn't support us.
#179 to #91 - gerfox (09/01/2013) [-]
Yep, independence from France after WW2 - more or less like Libya.

I'm going to go out on a limb here and post an opinion.

Appeasement only makes the aggressor more aggressive. If the United States (preferably backed by a "coalition of the willing") were to intervene in Syria, that shows a clear message to the world that tyrants and human rights violations will not be tolerated. Too many innocent people have died in Syria already, and I would be ashamed if my country and my generation were to sit idly while these attacks continue and continue. America still has enemies in the world. North Korea's got the bomb and Iran wants one. This is not the time for appeasement.

While i respect your opinion i have to say, mabye its time America just kept out of peoples countries i mean yeah people are going to fight wars are going happen in countries but does america alway have to be in the middle of it? ye claim to be a peaceful place yet ye have been at war for nearly 200 years, ye claim to be the land of the free yet ye are inslaved to your government. I know this sounds like " **** 'MUCIRA" stuff but i dont mean it in that way. We all know that a major reason America wants to go to war so often is because of oil lets not lie to ourselves on that one but you really have to ask on this one if its worth starting a third world war just so America can feel like the dad of the world and get more oil again? i think America asked for enough of they're allies blood during the Iraq conflict. Ready to be thumbed down into the ground for this.

I find it ironic that Obama's whole candidacy was based on change when he has basically done all of the things everyone hates Bush for doing. And yet all of the people who voted for him in the first place still defend him. I'm not going to lie or sugarcoat it: if Obama wasn't black he wouldn't have been elected the first or second time. Everyone hates Romney for being Mormon and rich, but at least he ******* understood how the economy works.
User avatar #112 to #50 - smittywrbmnjnsn (09/01/2013) [-]
I disagree, but without reason.

User avatar #56 to #50 - jldragon (08/31/2013) [-]
... the economy is doing fine, Romney would have just furthered the loopholes and policies that have been ******* over the middle class in the first place. Plus, he would have had us in Syria weeks ago so I don't see how he would have been much of a better option.

User avatar #54 to #50 - IamEllis (08/31/2013) [-]
my father being a MA state trooper worked directly under Romney back when he was govenor and my father said that he had never been more pleased with a man in poloitics. Romney was a buisness man who knew how to get the economy back on track but he won the first election because he was black. He won the second election becuause he made it so that there are more people in the cart than there are pushing the cart money wise. people on welfare who dont even need it make more than the average working person does. It's ****** and obama is one of the worst things that could have happened to this country
User avatar #236 to #54 - nitsuan (09/01/2013) [-]
I am pleased to see more people like you. I don't think Romney was rainbows and sunshine, but he would have been better than Obama. Obama has done so many stupid things during his presidency I am actually dumbfounded, yet he gets away with being an obvious hypocrite and making stupid mistakes because he is black and throwing out welfare checks and other services to anyone who ask for them.
User avatar #55 to #54 - IamEllis (08/31/2013) [-]

I don't think Syria will be as easy as Afghanistan, Libya, Egypt or Iraq.
#63 to #47 - angelusprimus (08/31/2013) [-]
It will be easier then Iraq and much easier then Afghan.
Country is already in the middle of civil war, you take out Assad's weapons and opposition will take him out, with no need for USA soldiers on the ground.
User avatar #71 to #63 - granodd (08/31/2013) [-]
I think what betars is trying to say is that they Syrian army is way, way, WAY better equipped than Iraq or Afghanistan, and they actually know how to use their weapons as well.
#74 to #71 - angelusprimus (08/31/2013) [-]
True, that's why the plan is to bring in carriers and missile ships, and just pound their supplies.
While they are well equipped and trained, against NATO they might as well be Belgians vs. Nazi Germany. Not so much a threat as something to step on. Its simply matter of scale. NATO has more and better equipement and armament by unimaginable level.
#288 to #47 - anon (09/01/2013) [-]
With Russia, China and Iran as allies...no it definitely will not
