Why would you tip someone for poor service?
"Oh you did a bad job, here's some extra money."
I see no logic.
Thank god for no tipping in the UK.

Everyone I know leaves a tip. We don't have to but we do because it's nice. Please don't generalise by saying 'no tipping in the UK'. I enjoy tipping, if the waiter or waitress has done a good job they deserve a tip and I feel happy that I've left one.
It's fine that you don't tip, in my opinion you should but I don't care either way. Again though, don't say 'no tipping in the UK'.

Well I've never seen someone tip in the uk.
Why should I tip someone who's already getting paid with the money I spent at their restaurant? I'm already paying their wage, why give them more for nothing?

It's the social convention. Luckily in the UK service staff are paid relatively okay compared to those in USA who get like **** all and rely on tips to get a decent days pay.
I don't care that you don't tip, but the way you're telling me you don't just makes you seem pretty snobbish. If they've done a good job (and it's the social convention to tip) then why not tip! I added that social convention bit in because I know you'd probably respond with some similar to 'well I don't get tipped for doing a good job where I work, why should they?'.

Just because everybody else is doing something doesn't mean I should...
Either way, I would not say that tipping was a social convention in the UK.

You're either quite ignorant, slightly autistic or just have a general bad attitude towards other people. Whatever it is, I'm bored of this conversation.

I absolutely dispise that, even for a terrible server, you are expected to pay at least 15% in the US, and your tip, not the money you spent on your food, pays their salary.
Pay your waiters a goddamn reasonable amount, and I'll tip them if they did a good job, a tip should be a reward, not an expectation.

dude, if you don't tip, then you are one massive asshole. It's not that hard to just leave a couple of extra coins on the table, especially when you have a good experience

It's quite simple. In the US, waiters are paid **** all, so it's kind of expected to tip. In the UK, wages are significantly higher, so it's not as necessary.

Not really, nobody tips in the UK.... It's just not expected.
They're paid to do a job by their boss, who pays them with the money I pay for the food.
I'm already paying their wages for eating at their place of work, don't know why I'm expected to just give them money....

I'm 18 and I don't have much money, but all my friends and I always tip when we go out to a restaurant together. It's not mandatory, but it's just something we do because it's the right thing to do really. Don't make all Englishmen sound like pricks just because you're an asshole who doesn't tip anyone.

Hmm, I'm from Northern England, I'm just saying I've never seen anybody tip.
I don't think it makes you a "prick", you're still paying their wages for eating there, they should be happy with that.

Not at all, in Britain, you don't need to leave a tip because waiters in the uk make a larger amount of money than other countries. I used to be a waiter for a very nice restaurant and you would only get tips if your service was outstanding. The UK gov said that a waiter must be above the minimum wage without the addition of tips, where as other countries can use the tips you collect on your shift to add towards your wage (making them pay under the minimum wage) A bit confusing to say, ha

More of an insult then a caring gesture.

People always seem to forget that tipping is completely optional, it's a gratuity.

No, many restaurants (in the US) force an 18% tip on you (almost all force it on you if you have six or more people).

It is a gratuity tax.
Think about it. A 6 person dinner could take two or more hours. In that time, the waiters/bus boys could do 2 or 3 other tables in that time. If tax was optional for that party, that would be a waste of time since they could do those other smaller tables and make more money.
