People who self harm are typically weak minded.
They're not bad people - they just lack the foresight to understand that life improves, and they lack the ability to deal with their problems in a positive way. When it gets too hard, they just give up and cut. I don't want to attack them, because I know a lot of people who are great people who've cut at some point, but it is an obvious weakness which shouldn't be praised. Much like people who turn to alcohol or religion to solve their problems.

A little bit of pain is actually good for people. We gain perspective through sorrow and develop. If life was always perfect, then we'd be in a comfort zone and would cease to develop as people.

Because when you think logically what a troubled person does you end up with the idea you expressed. You and I can't understand why someone would cut or even kill himself because we never had to go through what they've been. And calling them whiny attention whores wouldn't help anything, only deepen the problem.

Cutting usually starts on impulse. Whether due to traumatic events, abuse, bad home life, etc. It can also be habit forming and can become a compulsive behavior. When the body sustains a physical injury, the pain temporarily provides mental break. Though not always, self-injury can be linked to a variety of mental disorders, such as depression, eating disorders and borderline personality disorder.
It's also said that self harm releases endorphins.

tl;dr : cutting isn't always for attention.

If you want any "rational" explanation why desperate people cut themselves or simply hurt themselves (because there are other ways than cutting) it's actually pretty simple.

When you cut yourself there is not just pain, the body reacts by sending various chemicals and hormones to your brain like endorphins, serotonin and even dopamine. And let's not forget the obvious adrenaline rush you get which can even get you a bit high.

the act of cutting yourself is a subconscious act to make you feel better when everything else (friends, family, love, etc...) have failed.
It is a moment of despair and weakness probably triggered by a tragic event.
I was always a "normal" person, very happy and loving life and **** and I would also think that self mutilation was weird and stuff until the day my fiancé killed herself and I started being really depressed for years, but now I understand a little bit better why some people would do something like cutting

My dad is a portly man with a white beard aka, he looks like Santa. He has spent the last few years perfecting is "HO"s and learning about St. Nickolas. Around November, the Kids start noticing. it always cute when a little kids looks at thing then starts lighting up

"Are you Santa" they ask to which he answer with a mirthful
"Oh,HOHOHO!" with a jiggle of his belly.

When it's not in season and a kids "recognizes" him as Santa He will give them a soft my noticeable "SHHHHH"

He has also played Santa at a few small parties, never charging, but two years ago showed up to a Christmas party for My brother's company. that's Company as in the Army. he was tapped on the shoulder by a Captain who said "you look like Santa." he gave his normal answer. the captain was the man who played Santa the last three years and desperately wanted to spend this one with his kids as that it would be the first in a long time he was home. My Dad, a navy brat, became Santa for the party and had close to 300 kids sit on his lap and tried not to cry as many asked for something he had asked Santa many times, for Mom/Dad to come home.

Your father doesn't look like Santa Clause.

Your father is Santa Clause. It's not about the beard or the suit or the "HOHOHO", it's the selflessness of giving one's time and energy to make other peoples' day better for even a brief and shining moment.

yeah, I think so too. He's always been a very "laid back" kinda personality and gets his way with children from how he treats his grandchildren and how he treated me and my bothers as grandchild.

Another thing he did along time ago was he would play the tooth fairy. When one of us Kids would lose a tooth, instead of lying to us that some magical woman came into our room as we slept, He would come around the corner skipping and singing a tune with the words "Here he comes, the tooth fairy, the tooth fairy, the tooth fairy. Here he comes, the tooth fairy, to spread some dough!" and would take the tooth and give a predetermined amount of money depending on the tooth.

These are the kind of things that just put a smile on my face. These people are what make visiting Disney truly magical for kids. I still love the people in the Toy Story costumes and the fact they do a dead drop every time someone says "Andy's coming!"

To continue what 64(EmmyGee) said, people would spam the **** out of it, repeating "Andy's coming" every time the mascots got back up, so they changed it to where they freeze.

They don't do that anymore, there were apparently some injuries.

Related story, I once read a tumblr post about someone going to Disney World and getting a picture with Andy and hearing a grumbly voice from the costume saying "I swear, if you say "Andy's coming," this snake in my boot is going up your ass".
