"better"
It's better by animation, but in reality it is identical. The fact that it looks cool doesn't change that.

*******.... this was the most annoying thing about Morrowind, if the combat had been damage on hit instead of having a chance to deal, it would be such an amazing game.

On Nexusmods they have a mod that gives you one hundred percent hit chance.

So...wait...In Morrowind you didn't deal damage, but had a CHANCE to deal damage? What the blueberry **** kinda sense does that make?

None, but it was so awesome you usually kinda ignored it. Until cliffracers, anyway.

**** cliffracers... I forgot all about them until you brought them up again.

That was a dark time in my life.

Basically with any weapon type, you had a skill that that weapon used, like longsword for a claymore. So, anytime you swing your claymore at someone, your agility, their agility, your longsword skill, and their armor skill (unarmored, light armor, medium armor, or heavy armor), in addition to their block skill (if they have a shield), are all calculated to see if you hit or not.

I should also mention that ALL elderscroll games are like this.

No they aren't.
Oblivion and Skyrim will always deal damage, the chance to hit is based upon distance from the target, not stats, you could still deal a possible damage of 0, but that is because the damage rating on the weapons are the maximum damage, and their armour could absorb all of the attack, but the armour would still be hit. hence why poisons would still be applied, your weapon in Oblivion would be damaged and any enchantments would be activated.

Oh. Well, were the games before Morrowind like that, or was just Morrowind the overly complex D&D wannabe?

Dude, you gotta keep your stamina high. A fast flurry of blows like that is just gonna lower your to-hit chances and increase the risk of a knockdown.

As great as morrowind was it really hasn't aged well. The two things you spend most of your time doing, traveling and combat, were both a major pain in the ass, especially for lower level characters. By today's standards it's basically unplayable without heavy modding.
