Without your light saber you have no item to channel force power into, which is the only way to block force powers. (unless already presently a master and very versed in the force like yoda who can hold lightning attacks) enemy jedi/sith can use their power on you. Not to mention the action would leave you dead as well because depending on the block he is going to cut you in the head. Remember most jedi/sith can sense a little ways into the future to help predict attacks.

Cracked.
But more to the point, it takes about 2 seconds to turn lightsaber on and two to turn it off. And you are fighting someone with seriously speed up reflexes, all they have to do is swing, and you have nothing to deflect with.
You commited a suicide.

Rules of actual swordfight
1: Never ever try to block an atack with full on blade block, its a good way to lose a sword
2: That's what the shield is for, and it does not last long
3: If you have to use sword, you slide deflect and push with armguard, don't take blows full on
4: Avoid the sword, as much as you can
5: Move, ******, move, move, move, move

Real western swordfights are fast and exausting, and very different from kendo OR fencing.

...which actually is quite the problem because those things are heavy as ****. Most of these points are the same for Kendo/Iaido, tho. I did Kendo for some years and afterwards tried some european sword-fighting at an event, just for fun. Holy ****, I thought my experience might help, I´ve never been so wrong, you can´t use one stance you know from Kendo, effectively.

Properly balanced backsword (longsword) should weight about 2.5 lbs.
Though even that gets pretty heavy when you are holding on one end.
But yes, because of nature of straight two sided blade vs, curved one sided blade it is a very different beast.
Kendo is more about timing and one swift strike while western fighting is about movement and creating opportunities. Both are equally interesting though.

Until 1492 Portugal was considered far west .
When we say western in this way, we mean western civilization, which would say europe and north america.
And all the way to civil war light cavalry using sabers was very dangerous opponent. American horse sabre fighting was considered finest in the world at the time.

More useful with light swords of later era, like epee or saber.
Trying to pull a small blade on fully armed knight, would end you with face full of shield. Shield is also an offensive weapon.
And if you are fighting two handed you'd sacrifice a lot of speed with your main weapon. Not saying no one does it, but its not as useful as movies would make you think. (also, if you are pulling that one, make sure you are taller then the other guy)

I was thinking more of the Japanese who kept that extra blade with their sword. Or the middle eastern cultures to have a moderate sized blade in addition to their sword

Ah, gotcha.
difference is that in both cases weapons used are quick slashing one sided blade made for slashing.
Two sword fighting style in japan was developed beacause of need for deflection and their bamboo shields were not very good against katana swords while great against arrows.
In middle east two weapon fighting developed because of fighting against people wearing heavy chain mail. Slashing weapons have hard time getting through it, you have to stab (which is why european swords tended to stay straight and pointy) so a secondary weapon was needed to push through the links.

In Justice League and Superman's solo animated show he isn't as powerful as he is in some other stories. Also, as triggathepirate pointed out, it's probably magical or a laser sword. Magic can **** Superman's day up. Even in Kingdom Come, when Superman had aged a bit and absorbed enough sunlight to survive a nuke, just touching the blade of one of Wonder Woman's swords cut his thumb wide open.

Even at his strongest, Superman's not invincible. Doomsday beat him to death with his bare hands.

Well if you look at the movies people making those seem to think entire point is to hit other person's sword until they drop it.
Which would get you killed, FAST.
The point is to hit the other person's BODY, while moving yours out of the way. In proper sword fight there is a lot of dodging, moving and deflecting and very little or even better NO clashing.
Even with shield you prefer to deflect then to take a hit straight on. It HURTS.

Obi-Wan bouncing off the Death Star walls for 15 minutes would not have done a single positive thing for Star Wars. The original trilogy has the better story because it gets on with the story rather than focusing on irrelevant blow-by-blows.

************* exactly this, a million times this. For ****** sake, even if we only had ONE good sw movie, the rest wouldn't affect that ONE good movie. you're ******* free to ignore the rest. Hell, Schumacher didn't kill the batman, he made his version aimed for kids and satire (wich was a huge failure, specially that Jim Carrey thing... and the nipples), but the Batman of Miller, or Moore, didn't give a ****, nor did millions of fans of the dark knight, who later got what they deserved with the dark knight trilogy (and yes, TDKR is the best of the three to me and will always be, Bane is a ******* monster). The prequels were OK. If they hadn't try to link everything with the originals, they would've been sooo much better, yes. But they're films I love watching again and again, all of them, sometimes I feel more nostalgic and watch the originals, and sometimes I ******* want to see the prequels because THEY ARE GOOD MOVIES.

I love action movies, but there is nothing behind the fights. It's all just a special effects extravaganza. There is never a sense of urgency and they are so choreographed and graceful that it doesn't seem like a fight, more like a ballet recital.

They are spectacle marvels sure, doesn't give them meaning. When Obi Won fought Vader in a new hope even though they are just swatting at each other, that fight had more meaning then their choreographed opus in the third movie.
And the story in the movies are confusing and lazy. The only good thing about the prequels is the Genndy Tartakovsky show.

1: Jedi and Sith have speed up reflexes.
2: it takes 2 seconds to turn it off and on.
3: Lightsaber has no weight, meaning its very easy to change its movement
4: you just turned off only thing blocking your opponent from hitting YOU
5: You killed yourself because he has full two seconds to simply slice your head off.
