For parkour yes it is, for freerunning it's all part of the learning process though I would say you should practice on a less of a large drop.

It is why I enjoy parkour more then freerunning. Freerunning is cool but not needed.

Parkour philosophy is different from freerunning. Parkour is not to be flashy and do tricks, many traceurs do, do freerunning and learn tricks at a gymnastic gymnasiums. Here is a good TED talk about parkour traning:

Essentially the main difference between parkour and freerunning is that parkour does not involve tricks and it has a different philisophy to freerunning. Both give great exercise.

NP. Don't know why people are so mad that I said that parkour and freerunning are different. I like both but I prefer the parkour philosophy over freerunning.
