The US Army was forbidden from designing or producing tanks by congress until 1940 so they were very behind the time the war started. The Grant was mostly lend leased to the British and it had a good war in North Africa. While the Germans were on the right track with their tanks in terms of armoring and fire power, their suspensions were notoriously fragile (they loved to throw treads in rocky terrain) as were their engines. The Maybach V-12 was rushed and the problems with it were never completely ironed out and they needed to shipped back to Germany to be rebuilt after a dismal 300 hours of use. And German tanks were never very producible The best tanks of the war in all around terms were the Ruski's the T-34 was an awesome tank and the IS-2 could go toe to toe with Panzer VI or VII and win nearly every time.
