I remember this, it happened a while ago. The babysitter took the kid to the laundry mat with her boyfriend and he put the kid in the washer then started freaking out when the washer started. They didn't tell the mother, she found out from watching the news.

I've never committed fraud, but they could, for example, claim that the washers should have an emergency release or something, then sue the laundromat for not having it, or sue the manufacturer. I'm talking out of my ass here of course, but I think my smell explanation goes well with this half-assed plan.
