I saw this video on youtube; it's some really really good high school or college swimmer, I think this was either at Nationals or Junior Olympics. Anyway, he knew he couldnt win the race so he did this on purpose; he knew he was gonna get DQed for that.

You can only go 15 meters/yards underwater before you have to come up and start actually swimming. This rule was imposed during the first modern Olympics where swimming was a sport; because kicking underwater is the fastest way to swim, athletes in the first Olympics would just try and swim underwater indefinitely.

because he's not the best.

At that level of competition, in a 50 yard/meter race, the difference between first and last place is half a second. It's not too tough to qualify for a race like that, but it is hard to win one.

I mean good enough to get to National and Junior Olympics. Where those kids who are 14-17 years old are just a couple off seconds off Michael Phelps pace (depending on the length of the race. In a short 50 meter race like this, these kids are probably less than a second off of typical Olympic times.

is there a certain distance at which you need to be on the surface?

From the usaswimming rulebook.
"101.5 FREESTYLE
.1 Start — The forward start shall be used.
.2 Stroke — In an event designated freestyle, the swimmer may swim any style, except that in
a medley relay or an individual medley event, freestyle means any style other than butterfly,
breaststroke or backstroke. Some part of the swimmer must break the surface of the water
throughout the race, except it shall be permissible for the swimmer to be completely submerged during the turn and for a distance of not more than 15 meters (16.4 yards) after the
start and each turn. By that point the head must have broken the surface."

Depends what you're trying to do.
1. If you're trying to get bigger muscles- you're in the wrong place, go to the weight room lol, swimming gives definition, not bulk.
2. If you're trying to build endurance try something like this:
Warmup- 3x 200yds/m @moderate pace freestyle
100 @moderate pace backstroke
50 easy
Kick*- 6x50 15m moderate/20m fast/15m moderate on odds
15m fast/20m moderate/15m fast on evens
*Kickboard is recommended if available, if not, kick with hands at your
side, rotating your body to the side to take a breath
Swim (Main)
3x -300m hypoxic (breathing pattern) breathe every 3rd, 5th, 7th, 9th
stroke by 25 (25 breathing every 3rd, 25 breathing every 5th, etc. You will
do that 3 times to complete the 300)
-200 Negative Split HR13/16 (Negative Split=N/S=go faster on the 2nd
100 than the first 100) (HR13/16= the first 100, your heart rate for 5
seconds should be 13 beats, the 2nd 100 it should be 16 beats
per 5 seconds)
-100 easy then break for 1 minute between rounds

Warm-down (No matter how tired you feel, do NOT leave without warming down, you will have horrible regrets the next morning when you can't move because it hurts to even blink.)
6x50 -4x 50 easy
-2x 15m sprint/35 easy
I'll repost the set without the explanations now so you see it easier

-200 Negative Split HR 13/16

-2x 15m sprint/35 easy

That should be a decent one to start with, I didn't write intervals, so rest for no more than 10 seconds (unless specified otherwise) and still push yourself, if you let me know some of your times, I might be able to help make a better workout, if you're still interested :)

That's impressive, but not as much as you think - I couldn't do it, mainly b/c I can't hold my breath for **** - but I know people who could. The reason that all the other guys surfaced at the time that they did was because swimming rules state that you can only go 15 meters underwater per length, that guy did 50

So as cool as that was, the guy got disqualified and his race didn't count for anything
