The ref should have ejected him from the game instead. The player definitely deserved a suspension, but the ref deserved to be fired. The players are meat heads on a regular basis. Officials aren't allowed to be meat heads.

I understand, but it's still self defense. An odd job description: You watch for fouls, call them, but...if someone hurts you, you have to take it like a bitch, cower to your corner, and then send the player to the penalty box.

You don't send him to the penalty box. You kick him out of the game and because he shoved you, the league will stick up for you and suspend him for a few games or maybe the rest of the season. Leagues don't take official abuse lightly.

Back in the '70s, you would have been right because official unions and other threats like that didn't exist. Now they do.

So, where does he sit? Outside the stadium, or with his team on the bench?

He gets undressed, leaves the arena, and goes home. Either he doesn't get paid if it's professional hockey, or his money he paid to play in the league goes to waste.

Well first off, no one is ganged up on, you can clearly see the guy from the other team was attempting to break the two apart. Second, while the player did technically start it, he didn't "attack" the ref, he tripped him.

That's still considered attacking a ref when you do it on ice, and the ref has no pads.

I don't know if "atttacking" means something different in hockey, but as far as the gif is concerned, it only shows the player being a dick, not maliciously attacking a ref.
