I honestly think both actors would have filled the role pretty well. Jamie Foxx more so (only because I see him as an actor solely fitting a more adult role in film. Will Smith would have worked too, but I think he would have held back slightly, since he's rarely involved in projects with adult themes (at least recently).

It's based on a book. "Stone Fox". Plenty of books and movies have sad endings.

"Stone Fox". Just googled it. Little kid needs money to save his grandfathers farm. Dog dies in front of the finish line. My eyes are tearing up reading the synopsis.

I've seen Iron Will, and I think the premise is kinda the same. But the one I read and saw the kid lived in Idaho or Wyoming and was only 12 or 13.

I know which one you're talking about. I just remember the kid and his grandpa being really poor and the kid, at some point, opens their makeshift safe and it's mostly change. It was a pretty sad movie.
