What the author wrote: "The drapes were a dull blue."
What the teacher thinks it means: "The drapes were blue because it symbolizes the protagonists state of mind while overcoming his obstacle, and it contrasts with [another character]'s temperment...etc. etc."
What the author meant: The drapes were fucking blue.
MFW Teachers think every object in a book is a symbol

Every book I read for school sucked, even the good ones were made sucky by school.
That's especially bad if you're studying literature and have to read a lot. That's why I usually just look at the beginning and the end of a book. I try to figure out the rest by listening to those students who have read the whole book. And sadly I never had any trouble with this method.

Teachers always pick books based on how they used symbolism and metaphors and all that other shit, so that you actually have something to write about in the report.
The end result is that all the books are boring as fuck and no student ever pays a lick of attention to them.
