ive been on a plane that dropped a hundred feet in midair for no apparent reason, it was deathly quiet(also if anyone wants to learn me how a fucking airplane drops in midair before returning to normal id love to know)

A cold air pocket has a much lower density. Fly in a warm front with propellers going at 1000RPM then all of a sudden into a cold pocket... you need 2000RPM to maintain speed otherwise you just drop. Its like swimming in a pool of water, and then in syrup. Granted, syrup is delicious but you still need to use alot more energy to swim through that thick stuff. If you exert the same swimming energy from water in the syrup, you will go nowhere but down. (note, RPM values are not accurate)

Other way round my friend. Cold air is more dense, so if you're flying through "warm" air and hit a region of more dense air your lift will increase given the same airspeed. You will go up. That said, air in the atmosphere is in a tremendous state of flux, always churning up down and all around. More likely the "pocket" of air you hit was travelling downward or the same direction as the plane, the latter of which would decrease your airspeed and consequently, lift.

been a pilot for 3 years now.
let me just say; no.
downdrafts arnt very big usually. and always accompanied by rising air currents.
pilots will recover the plane before youll lose any major altitude.
especially airline pilots. theyre very experienced. plus, the airline jets fly at a very high altitude.

they do, but im a recreational pilot.
so i only fly for fun, and occasional transport when necessary. im actually an auto mechanic. :P
