Oddly enough, this is basically how the mechanism used in the bomb dropped on Hiroshima worked: two pieces of uranium hitting each other at high velocity (albeit one was accelerated with high explosives and the other was stationary).

No.
They are fission bombs. Highly inefficent fission bombs. But fission devices are easy and generally much cheaper to make.

Little Boy was a gun type device. With two pieces of a fissile material placed in a barrel, explosives shoot one piece into another.

Fat Man used the Implosion method,of a fissile material surrounded in explosive lenses. Once ignited they compressed the sphere into a very small, but very critical size, starting the reaction.

Both Fat Man and Little Boy were gravity bombs.

Ivy Mike is the first full size thermonuclear(hydrogen) device that we tested. That was in 1952. 7 years after Fat Man and Little Boy were dropped.

This is coming from someone whos written enough papers about nuclear weapons.
