Whether it's tits, reposts, whatever, in the end it's just people trying to post the most agreeable content or comments. It doesn't matter who has the lead or who's been red thumbed into oblivion. More often than not its a way to see what people think of your opinions. Funny how people are terrified to share their opinions here no?
Some people take em too seriously yeah, it's a big old competition. I'm sitting at rank #2 and thinking "well it'd be neat if i could get #1 for even just a minute, just so i shows on my profile that i was there" but thats the most i care. It's like collecting badges in pokemon, or to a greater extent: beating the elite four with 6 magikarps. It's all to see if you can i guess
