Well after the civil war secession was essentially made illegal. By breaking away from the nation you are denouncing the U.S government which, as we have seen from history, is an act of war.

So what if they are simple saying they do not want to be under the direct command of the US president? Not necessarily cut all ties but just not accepting the current President as their won leader? Not an argument, a question of sorts.

How is telling someone you don't want to be ruled by them anymore and would rather rule yourself is not an act of war? Just because a war occurred doesn't make secession an act of war.
