Even though gravity is pulling down on the spring, while the top is falling down to meet the bottom, the spring force, which pulls up on the spring is still present while the spring is stretched even a little bit. So until the spring is entirely compressed (destretched I guess:), the spring force will still hold up the bottom of the Slinky.

For those of you who might be curious as to whats going on.

Basically whats happening here is a good example of the "speed of push". When you move things it is literally a wave going through that object. Moving things from you to your friend, it seems instantaneous. But if you were to have it over a much longer distance it would be more apparent.

(Vsauce example) If you were to have a button one light year away and have a pole that can press that button that is one light year long and you push on it, did you just go faster than the speed of light?

No, because now you are talking about the speed of push, it would take 900,000 years for the waves to travel through that stick and push the button.

Now in the actual video they explain it. The slinkys tension pulling up as its falling is what causes the slinkys bottom to "mind its own business" until the top falls to the bottom and is all "hey were falling".
