because they don't have the equipment to salt and plow the roads at a moment notice, and they aren't used to driving in any snow.

We have salt and other such tools. The paranoia you're referring to is if we get up to a half a foot of snow/ice and it freezes over roads, bridges, etc. Which is completely within reason. We get the occasion inch and we're fine. We love it. It means that we're not in our extremely hot summer.

Actually your logic is somewhat flawed. While I agree with what you said, hurricanes and flurries are totally different situations. After Katrina specifically, the destructive power of a true hurricane became nationally aware. Thus many hurricane damage prevention tactics became important. You would think that people would realize that Sandy has no where near the force other hurricanes have so they would calm down.

Another hypothesis is that Sandy is striking the northeast which is always more important than southern states so it gets blown out of proportion.

Frankenstorm was bestowed because it collided and merged with another storm. Can't remember what kind but I know it was cold. Other than that, I'm referring not to the destructive power but to the level of preparedness and mental states.

No I understand, this storm isn't near as bad as some of the other 'cains. But on the other side this one was going to cause more damage with bigger waves (in some cases, and this was estimated). It's mainly just that we up north think "....a HURRICAIN?!?!" but a lot of us are also like "Wind and rain are nothing new here..."

That might be true, but there's a difference between a hurricane in hurricane country and a hurricane in the north. Buildings (which were properly constructed) in the gulf are structurally built to withstand high winds the same way that houses in LA are built to withstand hurricanes. Buildings in NJ are just built to stand the snow, I mean some structures were damaged from the 5.9 earthquake in 2011. So while something like this might not be a big deal for people who see earthquakes every day, people in the north are ill-equipped to deal with something like this.

It was very hyped-up, yahoo called it a "superstorm." People were in a panic. The expected damage was much higher than what I've seen.

That being said, there was damage. I would say that most of NJ is without power, and a good amount is under water. There were also record high waves during the storm (which isn't saying much because we get small waves anyway.)

Yeah, I am completely aware that Cat. 1's still fuck shit up but not to the extent people think is happening.

I used to live in New Orleans. For most of my life, actually. Left a year before Katrina. I still had family and friends who vividly explained the hell of Katrina.

Specifically the post-storm hell.

Katrina was the worst storm experience of my life. I live in the Gpt/Biloxi area and we didnt have power or water for almost a month and a half. Thank God for churches and free water

I agree. There was a storm about three years before Katrina (I forgot it's name) and I waded through 3.5 ft water and was without electricity for what felt like an eternity.

Sandy victims don't have to worry about going through the dead of summer without any electricity. The heat made everything smell horrible. Never again. This why I'm happy in middle TN. lol

will also never forget driving around neighborhoods and seeing the body count numbers spray painted on the sides of houses or the caskets that got washed out from graveyards...it was a lot for a 13 year old

I am a member of a Mardi Gras crew and the days leading up to the parade where haunting. Several months after the storm, there were still houses with the X saying "2 dead".

Have you ever read "One Dead in the Attic?" It's a book written about a guy's personal expirience during and after the storm. It was hauntingly interesting.
