I think it's pathetic that we have the resources to be able to spell correctly, or to formulate a proper sentence, but instead we decide to be lazy mother fuckers and just spell like brain dead three year olds.

Is it really a sign of intelligence to be able to spell properly when we have auto-correction or spellcheck? Once again I say that as long as the message is understood then language has done its job.

That's why it's sad. We have the tools to make spelling easier, and we choose not to use them. If i can't figure out how to spell a certain word, I look it up. I know i could be lazy and spell things out in a shorter form, but when I look at it, it just disgusts me that my spelling would look that bad. There's no reason to do it, i understand maybe a text message while you're waiting at a traffic light or something along those lines, but any other time when you have the free time to spell a word out completely and you choose not to is just asinine.

People could have TV's without remote controls and not be a lazy bastard and get up and change the channel with the buttons on a TV. Imagine the billions we as a whole would have saved without using remotes?

A valid point! Spelling correctly shows you have taken more time out to think about it but I think it is not crucial for the job that language is entailed for.

A lot of folks won't ever have to use proper spelling for the jobs they want, at least with most of the people from the end of my generation and the newer ones. Most of them are living in the, "here and now" they want a job where they don't have to think to hard or strive for excellence. They want something where it's instant gratification.

You're completely right though, we can understand what people are saying even though they shortened the words. But, when i think about it, i think they'll continue to use the spelling they use and think it'll be ok. Other people will think, "Hey, everyone can understand what i'm saying, why should i spell it out?"

Maybe the way we spell words will change in the future, maybe we'll turn towards an Idiocracy type of future, where we watch people get KICKED IN THE NUTS and we reply with a "Hurr hurr, he dun got kikd in da nutss." Hopefully not though.....

Sorry to hear it, as the people who spell bad on purpose would say, "DAM DAT HOE DUN FUKD UP. SHE DUN EVEN KNW WUT SHE LAWST."

Oh wait wait wait! One more thing that pisses me off to no end is when people go out of their way to spell things wrong like: HAAAIIIII WUUUUTTTSSS EVRYYBODDDY DOOOING TOOONIIIIGHHHHHHTTZZZZZ?

I don't know so much about being pissed off at HAAAAAAIIIIIII or things like that. It shows some character although IMO not of the good sort... But if people want to do things that way who are we to tell them otherwise? They have their own free will to do what they want just like us so I just let it be.

And we have our own free will to dispise them for their shitty spelling, it should be clear to you.
The same shit happens in French and it pisses me to no end.
The sentences are sometimes barely understandable.
Good spelling is not a matter of showing off. As you said about my remark on clothing, when I spell a sentence right and use good grammar, I show a bit of who I am.
Appearance is important, it defines what the people will think of you.
When I go in town, if I dress and behave like a beggar, people will think I am a beggar.
When I chat online, if I spell like a full retard, people will think I am a full retard.
I can't help but feeling sorry or annoyed when I see obvious mistakes that a fifth grader would not do anymore. I just don't read them anymore, delete them from my contacts and stuff.
Since I can't ban people from the internet for mispelling, I just correct them and make fun of them.

I don't mind it, so long as it sticks to mainly texts. Other then that I couldn't care less.

Though I do think (Flame Resistant gear, activate) it would be more socially acceptable if you used correct grammar in the general public. On places like FB, if it on someone's wall, and you have an IQ of over 50 then I'm pretty sure either right-clicking a misspelled word to correct it, or having a tab with a dictionary page open wont hurt one bit.In private (namely IMs,) of course who the fuck cares if it's spelled like that? Only you, and the other person can see it.

An interesting passage in the book 1984:
One of the Government workers is discussing with the main character the project he's working on - a universal language called 'newspeak'. The idea is that the Government wanted to construct an oversimplified language, which would constrict the boundaries of peoples thought, making them literally dumber and easier to control.

Now, leetspeak was the opposite of that - it was an organic, quickly-evolving sub-language so that proponents of '1337' culture could express 'leet' ideas to eachother quickly (and also pack a lot of overused humor into their discourse). You can argue about the usefulness/annoying-ness of Leetspeak, but as much as it may have dumbed some people down, it also helped bring society into the Internet Age in its own way.


These obnoxious Facebookers like in the post, however, already think small, stupid, trivial thoughts about 'popularity' and other generally niggerish and petty things, and the reinforce their fetishistic pursuit of cheap mental stimulation by using language that dumbs them and their acquaintances down. THAT is the evil way to use a language - to dumb one's self down instead of to use a language to articulate ideas, which in turn builds up your mind.

Point is - her speech above is not to communicate more effectively - it's to intentionally create a culture of 'stupid' around her.

Yeah, right, why bother with correct spelling if people still understand...

And why cooking food for your guests when nutriments are already present in raw vegetable?

By spelling correctly you show the respect you have for the people who will read afterwards along with showing to them taht you are not a full retard.

I think we wear nice clothes to show our success and beliefs/interests and cook raw vegetables as it is hard for our bodies to extract the nutrients from them so we don't absorb what we need without cooking.

Baring in mind you've made some spelling mistakes are you calling yourself disrespectful?

I made mistakes that are actual mistakes.
I actually showed the exact amount of respect you deserve, I sent a message mostly correct and the few mistakes either come from the fact that I type on a keyboard or the fact that I am French and English is not my native language.
I am not talking to my friends, my family or a teacher, here.
