Here's an AK-107. The yellow part is a counter-recoil system that reduces muzzle climb, and makes the rifle more manageable during full auto fire.

I shot a G23 once with a 33 rd. mag, and the mag literally exploded, sending debris everywhere. A un-fired round hit me in the face, and the range master had to shut down the range until I could find all the parts. Fucking sucked, man.

how? i have a glock 22...put easily 7k rounds in it and have had less than 10 FTF's and nothing catastrophic like that

Probably just a fucking cheap aftermarket mag.

This is known as a short recoil system, and almost all modern combat pistols use this type of action.
