actually, i think it may be more of a reaction to an unexpected event, whereas the one in your gif is attacking, and wont be deterred. its the same reason why things scare you more when you least expect it, but when you have adrenaline rushing through your system, they dont.

Actually I think the lack of a tail disrupts his balance, so when he jumps to catch the bird, it embarrases himself.
