Im reading "The Lord of the Rings" and I ve noticed plenty of differences like this one...not to mention the scenes that dont show up at all in the movie. I think they do that to give you a more vivid idea of the situation. A movie wont be interesting if it is as realistic as the book, they have to put more emphasis and dramatize the even to help you get in the character's position.

I think its interesting either way

It's impossible to put everything in a book as detailed as the Lord of the Rings into a movie adaptation. Certain things have to be changed or left out. After all, it is an ADAPTATON after all.
