I want to lose 4 inches off my waist (from 28 to 24). Right now I do a mix of jogging and strength training, but am thinking of stopping the strength and instead go jogging everyday because:
1. My abs are getting too defined for my liking and,
2. My friend's dad (who is a bodybuilder) says that no weight is lost through strength draining.

Does this sound like the right thing to do?

1. Are you a male or female?
If you are a male, it will be hard to lose weight with strength training. You will lose fat, but gain muscle - which is fine. If you are wanting to lose fat around your belly, you will lose it with the right sort of strength training, but you won't necessarily decrease how much you weigh because muscle mass will increase.
If you are a female, muscle gains will be negligible at best. The reason is because the hormone testosterone is directly related to muscle gain. A female has very tiny (if any) concentrations of testosterone in her system, so she will gain strength, but will become toned, not bulky.
TL;DR - men gain muscle mass, girls get toned. You will lose fat with strength training, but not lose weight.
2. The type of strength training is essential to fat loss. High intensity work outs burn the most fat - A high intensity circuit workout will burn fat +12 hours post workout.
TL;DR - Google high intensity circuit workouts for a strength training regime that will burn fat
3. Body builders are known binge eaters - They torch fat, dehydrate themselves, starve themselves, and gain muscle leading up to competition, but then binge eat post competition to regain the nutrients. No insult to your friend's dad. He's right in saying that strength work outs dont help you lose weight in men because the weight you lose in fat you would be gaining back in muscle (in theory)
TL;DR Body builders aren't the best to come to for advice on healthy weight management.
4. Comment about eating like a bird made down yonder. Don't do that. Eating food increases your metabolism. You should eat 6 small meals a day. Your metabolism goes as follows: when there is no food, it slows down to preserve energy stores. When there is food, metabolism is high so that it can break down the food. Now as for eating healthy - Avoid carbohydrates and sugars (i.e. breads and FRUITS). You shouldn't cut them out completely, but they should be taken in minimally. (continued)

4. Sugars and carbs are essential for proper metabolic activity BUT this is what your fat is for. Fats are broken down and converted into glucose so taking in sugars and carbs isn't as necessary as proteins and veggies. A good rule of thumb is no carbs or sugars after noon everyday. Also eat a breakfast with a mix of protein and natural sugars as that will jump start your metabolism for the day.
TL;DR Don't eat too much sugar and carbs. Stick to proteins and veggies and water.
5. Don't drink too much water as that will add to your weight by making you water logged - Also try get asparagus in your diet - it is a diuretic and will help maintain a healthy water concentration in your body.
TL;DR Asparagus will help you lose excess water weight
6. To answer the abs question - Try take up yoga or pilates which will build core strength but you won't get super huge abs.
7. ALso remember this: Genetics plays a huge part in the excess fat or mass around our waist. You may do everything right and just not be able to lose that weight because your genetic make up won't let you.
8. Instead of jogging - Mix in some sprinting days - Sprinting burns more calories per unite length than jogging does. Like circuit training it burns fat long after the work out ends.
If you read all that and have any questions, add me and/or PM me. I will be glad to go into more depth about everything I spoke about and give you more workout advice.

One other thing.
Starving yourself causes fat accumulation and the release of stress hormones like cortisol which slow metabolism, increase fat stores, and weaken your bones.
Working out too hard or too much releases cortisol as well.
Cortisol is a stress release hormone. Meaning any time your body is under stress (studying for a final, working out, in intense heat or freezing cold, etc) cortisol is there. It is good for brief periods - i.e. it helps break down muscle when you work out so that you can build it up again... but if it is secreted continuously it wreaks havoc on your body and your bones (it takes calcium out of your bones ergo weakens them)

Your friend's dad is either stupid, explained it wrong, or you didn't understand him.

How to lose weight: Eat less than you spend.

It is not more complicated than that.

Dude, I already eat like a freaking bird, I always watch what I eat, and at least 4 servings of fruit per day, and veggies at supper. Always have water at hand, never eat any junk food. It's not like I'm fat or shit - I weigh 120 pounds, I just want to have the ideal waist.
I already have the perfect body besides that - Ds and 34" hips.

Can you answer the question properly, please?
#1724 to #1716 - N. Korean citizen (06/15/2012) [-]
Sure, I'll respond then.

YOU CANNOT MAKE YOUR WAIST SMALLER.

If you're fat around the waist then you need to eat less. If you aren't, that means you need to chisel your bones off. Oh and that's probably gonna kill you.

Mind you, there is a thing called eating TOO LITTLE when you want to lose weight. If you eat below your MINIMUM caloric intake, your organs and body start preserving fat and spending anything else (muscle) to gain energy. If you eat below 2000 calories and still train on the side, odds are you are in that area. Which means you have to eat more and train more.

Oh and to lose weight from 120lbs you'd have to eat basically literally nothing. And lmao 4 servings of fruit. Fruit is almost 100% sugar. Just take a multi.
#1735 to #1720 - chocopockey (06/15/2012) [-]
Fruit also provides you with fiber and nutrients. If people could live of multis I'm sure they would, but it doesn't work like that.
User avatar #1747 to #1735 - perfagly (06/16/2012) [-]
Actually it does work like that. Humans don't need fruit. I can't even remember the last time I have had a piece of fruit and I'm in excellent health.

Why the fuck do you want to lose weight from 120lbs?

How tall are you?
#1733 to #1719 - chocopockey (06/15/2012) [-]
I don't want to lose weight, I'm at a good weight, just interested in taking off the inchage around my waist. I'm a good size everywhere else.
User avatar #1736 to #1733 - perfagly (06/16/2012) [-]
Hate to say it but at that weight and height it's probably just genetics.
Your obliques are probably too far out to allow a 24" waist.
