I have day 1 release version and it plays all the new best games perfectly fine.
GTA 5 was the first time it's ever needed to activate the fan, I figured it was just a quiet fan but nope, playing GTA 5 one day then suddenly my PS3 starts making a humming noise.

Me too, although I had to delete all of my old save data to install GTA IV. Worth it.

I had the first release version but Black Ops killed it...

Suffice to say, I stopped playing COD after that.

That happened to my slim... I want to buy another one because I have so many games to play, but all I can find are the ****** new PS3s with the cheap plastic and the sliding top disk tray...

That's good. But have you tried playing any huge games like LA Noire or GTAV or Assassin's Creed 3? Because there are known problems with the first gens not being able to games like those. I've had one friend's die from LA Noire and one friend whose OG ps3 simply refused to play Last of Us.
