That thing in the water is not a dog.
Anything less than 40lbs is a cat.

I'm so confused... How can she speak really well when she's been deaf her whole life? Wouldn't she not be able to know how to pronounce words? Or even understand what others are saying for that matter?
User avatar #48 to #46 - evilhomer (06/18/2014) [-]
Years of speech therapy.

How does she understand what the nurse is saying to her if she's never heard words before?
#64 to #2 - fuckyosixtyminutes (06/18/2014) [-]
You left out part of the feels: What she's listening to in that scene is a recording of her own voice.

Too bad she wouldn't be able to talk

It was pretty cool how, although she never heard before, she had an american accent and knew how to pronounce words with correct intonantions and such. She only has a small lisp, but apart from that is impressive as hell.

I'm deaf and wear a cochlear implant, (check the name) and I can watch the tv on mute and know whether someone speaks with an accent just based on the way their mouth moves on certain syllables. My guess is that her hearing got progressively worse over time which is why she has some basis of vocabulary.

I can't even really imagine what it would be like to experience a new sense all of a sudden. Pretty neat.
#71 to #10 - reginleif (06/18/2014) [-]
**reginleif rolled image** Excuse me sir, would you like to experience the 6th sense which is buttsecks?
User avatar #91 to #10 - drtrousersnake (06/18/2014) [-]
this is sad but true. Even if someone gain a new sense, if they were disabled at a young age, they may have never developed the part of the brain that processes that sense, causing them to experience the stimulation but not be able to fully understand it.

TL: DR,
Using these procedures to return a lost sense is good, but using this to give someone a sense they never had can end horribly. There are many accounts of blind/deaf people killing themselves after gaining sight/hearing because the stimulation was too foreign to them
#106 to #10 - zallaz (06/18/2014) [-]
Many scientist think that we actually have more senses, but they have become useless to us so we don't know how to use them or perceive them anymore, kind of like the appendix.
As you may know, many dogs react to earthquakes before they even happen. This could be caused by a huge static buildup due to the friction of the plates, which animals can sense. We, however, can't sense it, maybe due to the fact that we're constantly surrounded by static electricity in the modern day.
Some monks have been said to unlock and learn the ways of these senses, I don't know if it's true or not.

tl;dr: if you want to experience a new sense become a monk

pic only slightly related

I read a story about a man that was blind ever since he was born.
One day they developed a way to cure him, and so they did.
The man killed himself a month later, because this new sense was so overwhelming he couldn't handle it.

I like how the dog looks back at the camera man for a second like "Do you see this **** man? Holy **** seeing things kicks ass"

Thinking that animals swear makes me laugh and helps me forget my own dog ran in front of a car and died.

But I'm sincerely sorry about that, happened to my own dog. The piece of **** driver just drove off too even though people saw.
