I couldn't understand it either for the longest time (and so, didn't have Twitter). But recently something occurred to me: it's a neat way to be able to communicate with your favorite celebrities (be they TV or movie stars, famous comic book artists, video game designers, whatever). Yes, you can write them an email, but I'm sure most of the time they are too busy to answer them. A short concise message however, can get through.
I still don't have Twitter though
